Everyday Manners is for dogs who know a little but don't listen when it matters: at the door, when guests arrive, or when something tempting hits the floor. It starts with your rights and responsibilities as a dog owner in public, then builds calm, reliable habits one step at a time. Every exercise uses rewards. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training only, and found no evidence that force, pain or fear (prong or shock collars, leash jerks, shouting) work better in any situation.
What you'll achieve
By the end of the course
A down and a stay that hold for a full minute
Leave it, for dropped food, socks and snacks
Waiting calmly while the front door opens
Four paws on the floor when guests arrive
Part 1: Before you start
Your rights and responsibilities
Short reading lessons on what the law says about pets and service animals, and what's expected of you as an owner. Each ends with a quick quiz.
Pets, service animals and the law8 min read
What a trained pet is, and isn't, in the eyes of the law. This keeps you, your pet and our certificate on the right side of it.
Your responsibilities as a dog owner7 min read
The everyday rules that keep you, your dog and your neighbours safe: licences, vaccines, leashes, cleanup and bites.
Part 2: Training
6 training lessons, about 10 minutes each
Each lesson has an animated diagram of the steps, step-by-step practice, troubleshooting tips, a clear goal for moving on, and a quiz.
Down from a sit10 min
Down is the base for calm behaviour everywhere.
Stay, one second at a time12 min
Build a stay in tiny steps: first how long, then how far, then distractions.
Leave it10 min
Leave it keeps socks, snacks and dropped food out of your dog's mouth.
Wait at the door8 min
The door only opens when your dog is calm. Safer for everyone.
Four paws on the floor for guests12 min
Jumping gets attention. We make calm greetings get it instead.
Putting it all together10 min
Practise the full one-minute stay so it's solid before the final skills check.
How you finish
The final skills checklist
When every lesson is done, you tick off each skill once your pet can do it reliably. Your certificate is issued as soon as the list is complete.
