About this course

What it's for

If walks are a tug of war or calling your dog back is a gamble, this course is for you. It starts with the leash laws, cleanup rules and public etiquette that apply to every walk, then teaches your dog that a slack leash is what gets them where they want to go, and that coming back to you is the best deal in the park. Every exercise uses rewards. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training only, and found no evidence that force, pain or fear (prong or shock collars, leash jerks, shouting) work better in any situation.

What you'll achieve

By the end of the course

  • Walks on a loose leash without pulling
  • Comes back when called, even outdoors
  • Passes other dogs without lunging or barking
  • Calmer, more enjoyable walks for both of you

Part 1: Before you start

Your rights and responsibilities

Short reading lessons on what the law says about pets and service animals, and what's expected of you as an owner. Each ends with a quick quiz.

  1. Pets, service animals and the law8 min read

What a trained pet is, and isn't, in the eyes of the law. This keeps you, your pet and our certificate on the right side of it.

  2. Your responsibilities as a dog owner7 min read

The everyday rules that keep you, your dog and your neighbours safe: licences, vaccines, leashes, cleanup and bites.

Part 2: Training

5 training lessons, about 10 minutes each

Each lesson has an animated diagram of the steps, step-by-step practice, troubleshooting tips, a clear goal for moving on, and a quiz.

  1. The magic spot by your leg10 min

Teach your dog that the best place to be on a walk is right beside you.

  2. Tight leash means stop10 min

Pulling only works if it gets them where they want to go. We take that away.

  3. The recall game indoors8 min

Make coming to you the best game in the house.

  4. Long-line recall outside12 min

A long line lets your dog practise freedom safely while you build distance.

  5. Passing other dogs calmly12 min

Teach your dog that seeing another dog means looking back at you.

How you finish

The final skills checklist
